Field sketch of Skye

Field Sketching

It took me years to come up with a way of capturing images that didn’t make me feel inadequate as an artist or unable to convey the sense of place that could underpin future textile art.

After much trial and error I stumbled upon the use of a fine felt pen or biro to draw lines on an almost dry watercolour wash.   This allows me to work at speed to illustrate snatches of place and time.  The finished sketches act as a kind of visual shorthand when it comes to creating textile art of the kind found in the cloudswept hills.
