The Interior Monologues Exhibition was held at the University of South Wales during February and March 2019. Seven artists were asked to respond to pieces of work held in the University’s Museum collection and seven creative writers then interpreted the contemporary work and its link to the original. I was paired with artist Mererid Velios who chose a photograph of an abandoned domestic interior as her starting point. Her own art was a commentary on the implementation of the Universal Credit benefit system. I composed a piece entitled “Here is my hand” which begins by examining the assumed narratives in the photograph and ends with an indictment of social care. It can read as an independent work of poetic prose as well as a reflection of Mererid’s thought and creative processes.
