I use gesso coated canvas with bonded calico to the rear as a stiffener and to minimise any edge fraying. Although small (usually 7″ x 5″) there’s a lot of meaning crammed into this limited space. I layer using printing and painting techniques, embedding symbols or words of significance. Stitching is kept quite flat in case the card ever needs to be mailed but I usually manage to get my signature couched strips of net, cretan stitches and french knots in there somewhere. On the reverse of the postcard I print the lines of poetry which were composed at the place that inspired the image. You can see some of my poems under the tab called ‘The Moving Finger’.
